Making progress

2 min read
It's been quite a while since I took on a personal project to photograph some of my close friends.
Well, I have finally completed the project. It really shouldn't have taken me so long, but, schedules being what they are, getting sidetracked by everyday life, and convincing my friends to cooperate took longer than I expected.

I chose these guys because I have known them nearly all my life. Carl I actually met in kindergarten, Dan in 2nd or 3rd grade, and Mac and Scott in 7th grade. We've done stupid things together, traveled together, gone to and been in each other's weddings, watched our kids grow up, and stood by each other in times of difficulty.

It is not easy, after all these years, to try to look at them objectively - but I have. And what I see are honorable, intelligent, accomplished, straight-forward men - with a remarkable appreciation for the ridiculous. (Bear in mind that I do not use the term 'men' indiscriminately - being a man or woman is not a function of age, it is a function and reflection of character.) These are the people you want living next door to you.

They are good friends, and I am both fortunate and proud to be able to call them so. I hope my photographs have done them justice.

As I have done before, I'd like to also note a few photographers whose work I especially admire and respect. Take some time to look at their galleries. It will be worth it.

OK, so it's only been a year and a half since I last posted a journal - no rush, right?
As usual, I would like to note just a few of the artists (in no particular order) whose work has awed and inspired me:

Please, if you haven't been to their galleries, do so. It will be worth your time, I promise. This is just a short list. There are many others, and I will note them in future posts - though I will not wait so long to do so - that I also promise.

So many of the people I've had contact with have proven to be kind, thoughtful and generous souls, and the ability to interact with them is one of the aspects of dA that I value most. There are some pretty remarkable people on here (and some jerks, too - as there are everywhere, but that's not the point here). With that in mind, I simply want to say, "Thank you, Stacey. You are an angel."

Since I last wrote, my life has changed dramatically.  I was laid off from my job, but found that it was liberating rather than debilitating. I decided to re-establish my professional photography - specializing in that aspect that I find so compelling - architecture. (For those interested, my website is nrkimages.com ) I had worked professionally for 11 years, though it's been 17 years I've been away from it. Seems kinda ridiculous, doesn't it? But ya know what? I don't care. It's what I love to do, and given that I am deeply ensconced in middle age, I figure it's about time to do what I want. So there.

Wish the old guy luck.

All the best,
Nevin

This is long overdue. But, since I recently deleted my gallery - then put it back - a short introduction. I was a professional architectural photographer for 11 years, but walked away for a number of reasons.  Getting back into the medium has been both fun and frustrating.  I have been moved and inspired by many of the artists on DA, which has been fun. Converting my old film work to digital, and learning to work in digital -  has been frustrating. It has been about 15 years since I was involved in photography, and the excitement is back - in large part due to some of the truly remarkable artists - and people - I have encountered here.  So a general, but heartfelt thanks to all of them.

A short time ago, an artist whose work amazes me issued a challenge of sorts: she offered to highlight work of others in her journal whose work might otherwise not be seen, in exchange for those so highlighted to do the same for others. I have not, until now, kept my part of the bargain.  Not because I didn't want to, but only because I am not sure how to insert the proper links. So, I will try - but if unsuccessful, I will include the DA names of these artists  whom I admire and respect in the hope that those reading this will take the time to check them out - it will definitely be worth your while.

These are just a few of the artists whose work I find amazing.  I know I have left many out, and I apologize. For more, see my favorites.

Another promise I need to keep was to myself.  I have intended to acknowledge and praise the work of models and photographers who regularly and openly put themselves out there.  I think it takes great courage to expose yourself to the eyes and criticism of others. These, mostly women, deserve our thanks and respect, not only for being so bold and open, but for constantly reminding us of the beauty of the human body. So THANK YOU to all the models and self-photographers.  Your efforts are appreciated.

On a more personal note, I am working on a couple of personal projects. One is to photograph people I know that are remarkable to me for one reason or another.  Another is to work with some models  to examine the nude form.  Both will take some time, as I don't have as much opportunity to shoot as I would like.  Life seems to keep getting in the way. Since I live in the Philadelphia area, if anyone would be willing to endure my lens, I would truly appreciate it.

So, thanks for reading the rambling journal.
All the best,
Nevin

OK, I got pissed off (for a number of reasons) and yanked all my submissions.  After thinking about it, I decided to repost my images. So, here they are, again.
